All in the Family: An Inspiring Trip Overseas

Hi friends! Joey checking in after my most recent vacation to Europe with my husband, Max (the General Manager at Wölffer), and a surprise visit from my brother and co-owner, Marc Wölffer! We had such a blast exploring new places and visiting some of our Rosé-producing friends overseas and wanted to share the highlights with you.

Max and I headed off to Bruges, Belgium, as the first stop on our trip to celebrate a dear friend’s wedding and explore a city we have never been to before – it was wonderful! Highly recommend visiting and enjoying the museums and the beer. We were then off to France, where we enjoyed the Provence countryside and many glasses of delicious wine before heading south to St. Tropez, where Max lost me multiple times in the colorful St. Tropez Market – oops! I picked up a few adorable dresses for my little girls and some unique finds for my store, which are on display now in Sag Harbor.

As Max and I were reminiscing on the flights home, we both agreed the highlight of the trip was the visit with our friend Jean Francois Ott, of Domaines Ott, and see Chateaux Ott Clos Mireille in the South of France. Marc had joined us for the day and we walked through the vineyard discussing grapes, the geography, soil type, and climate of his region. Like us, they are highly focused on producing quality grapes to make the best Rosé and have the same goal of positioning Rosé as a quality, food-friendly, versatile, and elegant wine that can be enjoyed any season. We talked about the shared passion for producing quality Rosé and the changing market with the influx of different formats and fusions of Rosés, celebrity brands, and new packaging types. “We need to keep shouting quality,” he said. We all could not agree more.

A favorite anecdote of Max’s is learning about the unique signature bottle shape. As we walked through his production facility, we learned that his great-grandfather wanted to make the Domaine Ott shape the standard for all wine in Provence, but the other wineries felt it was too expensive, leaving Domaine Ott as the only one. Now it is their signature shape and known all over the world. Lucky them!

Like Wolffer, they also make whites and reds as well, which we enjoyed sampling. We finished with a beautiful Domaine Ott white wine with grilled fish at a lobster restaurant on the beach. Their vineyard borders right up to the coastline, which is just stunning. Imagine that on the Hamptons beaches! It was truly a fantastic trip and we returned to the East End so inspired to continue leading the region in sustainability, quality, and innovation.
