Wölffer City Guides Vol. 2 - Rottweil

Where in the world is Wölffer? Join us each month as a member of our team gives you the inside scoop to their favorite Wölffer-serving city!

Touchdown Rottweil! This month we are headed to a beloved Wölffer country: Germany! With both Christian Wölffer and Roman Roth originating from Germany, we certainly have some strong ties to the country. Our first ever international market, we began selling our wines in Germany in the early 2000's with Winemaker and Partner Roman Roth leading the way. Our guests are always excited and surprised to learn just how many of our products are available overseas, and how well they sell -- you can find anything from our No. 139 Ciders to red, white, and rosé wines, plus many White Horse and dessert wines. Locals especially love the Summer in a Bottle Rosé! Using both his childhood and his many work trips to Rottweil as a reference, Roman gives his top picks when exploring the city.

Name: Roman Roth
Title: Winemaker/Partner
City: Rottweil, Germany
Last Time Visited: July 2018
Favorite Part About Rottweil: The quaintness of the city is magical. It is a beautiful Medieval town and on Saturday mornings you can walk through the heart of the village where farmers are propped up selling the freshest produce, cheeses, and loaves of bread, kids are playing, the church bells are ringing, and the air is full of laughter and amazing scents.
Favorite Thing to Eat and Drink: A fresh butter pretzel, a sausage salad, and a cold wheat beer.
Most Unusual Thing to Try: Calves tongue in Madeira sauce with Spätzle and cream potatoes and beetroot salad.
Must Do: There is a  brand new tower, the ThyssenKrupp elevator test tower, which has the highest observation platform (807 feet) in all of Germany. You will be able to perfectly see Villingendorf, the village I grew up in, as well as the Black Forest and the Swabian Alp. It is amazing.
Where to Spot Wolffer: Bacchus Vinothek. Ask for Michael Grimm, who is our distributor in Germany, and he can give you the insider tips about the town and region, and the best wine; or go to visit Weinhaus Kreuz in Villingendorf to taste many of the Wölffer wines.
Best German Wolffer Pairing: Local roast almond trout with the Perle Chardonnay or fresh mushroom ragout with the Grapes of Roth Merlot.
Favorite Anecdote: At the carnival (called Fasnet) the whole town is crazy! It is difficult to do it justice with words, but the whole town jumps along with the rhythm of the carnival march and it is a wild party from 8am till late! After the big parade it becomes a pup crawl and one catches up with old friends as well as making new ones. It is better than Carnival in Rio or Mardi Gras in New Orleans, that's for sure!
